JRS Australia celebrates our volunteers for National Volunteers Week

a group of volunteers gathered for volunteers week

The compassion our JRS volunteers show the people that we serve is an inspiration to us all. Ask any JRS staff member and they’ll tell you how lost we’d be without them.

Jesuit Refuge Service celebrated our volunteers as part of National Volunters Week hosting a dinner at Sahra by the River in Parramatta.

Our JRS Australia volunteers are worth a whole lot more than just their weight in gold. The compassion they show the people that JRS serve is an inspiration to us all. Ask any JRS staff member and they’ll tell you how lost we’d be without them.

Our fabulous volunteers fulfil various roles:

  • At Parramatta they help on reception, give hospitality, help with food bank, assist with cooking and lunches where clients cook, go on home visits, are involved with ‘Play with English’ where a play group for children is included, attend our men’s group night, assist in employment support and teach English
  • At Kings Cross our volunteers fulfil office duties, help with a regular fortnightly meeting or cooking at Blaiket Place, support our clients and help with housekeeping duties.

It was an amazing night where all our volunteers could meet socially, relax and enjoy each other’s company in a different environment, sharing a variety of delicious entrees, salads, BBQ skewers and wine.

One volunteer commented on the night saying; “It was a wonderful, warm and friendly event, bringing the volunteer community together to celebrate being a volunteer.”

This dinner goes some way to show how grateful we are to all these volunteers who contribute to the JRS mission, ‘to accompany, serve and advocate for asylum seekers.’ The respect and kindness of our volunteers knows no bounds and we are truly blessed to have such a magnificent group of people helping us to give hope and assistance to people seeking asylum in the community.

The theme for this year’s National Volunteers’ Week is ‘Give Happy, Live Happy’. It’s an apt slogan considering it’s been proven that volunteers are happier and healthier people.
