Zahra moved to Iran when she was young and later married an Iranian man.

Zahra moved to Iran when she was young and later married an Iranian man.

In 2010, Zahra’s husband was forced to flee Iran and escape to Australia by boat. While he was held in a detention centre on Christmas Island, it was very hard for Zahra and her children as there was no money to support them while they were living in exile.

Once her husband was successful in securing a visa, he was able to apply for Zahra and their children to come to Australia in 2013. However there was a problem – as an Afghan living in Iran, Zahra was never granted an official ID card. So she was forced to make her way back to Afghanistan to retrieve her Afghan ID card.

On the dangerous journey, she was advised to not take anything that held great value to her. She decided the item she could not leave without was the photo of her father who had passed away. That photo stayed with her throughout her journey back to Afghanistan, and then all the way to Australia.
