Seeing through others' eyes

To cap its commemoration of 30 years of service, JRS enlisted eight asylum seekers from Cambodia, China, Iran, Pakistan and Sri Lanka to participate in a project that would give them an opportunity to tell their stories in their own way and in their own voice. They were given point-and-shoot cameras, two hours of training and two months to put into pictures a narrative of their lives in the Thai capital, reports UCANews

Don't stoop to stupid policy over boat tragedy

Almost a year to the day when a boat sank off Christmas Island with horrendous loss of life, yet another asylum seeker tragedy, with an even higher death toll, has occurred. Up to 150 people bound for Australia may have died in the seas off East Java on Saturday, writes Aloysious Mowe in Eureka Street.

JRS Youth Award winners announced

The third annual JRS Youth Award attracted a diversity of entries ranging from the clever and practical to the technically brilliant, with the Director of JRS, Fr Aloysious Mowe SJ, describing the winning entries variously as 'haunting' and 'brilliant'.

High Court grounds Malaysia Solution

The Government has taken a 6-1 drubbing in the High Court of Australia. Many lawyers, myself included, are surprised, and some of us delighted. Offshore processing of asylum seekers has become a legal minefield for government. The judges have erected three obstacles for any government wanting to ship asylum seekers offshore before attending to their claims, writes Frank Brennan SJ in Eureka Street.
