Omar treasures many items that represent great loss to his family.

Omar is stateless. His heritage is Palestinian. He and his parents were born in Burj Brajane – the largest refugee camp in Lebanon.

His mother Rowayda, his brother Mohammad and his sisters Hanan and Sarah all arrived as refugees to Australia in August 2014.

Omar treasures many items that represent great loss to his family. Like the tax receipts of his grandfathers land in Palestine that was stolen in 1948. Like the Palestinian traditional scarf that a friend brought over to Lebanon from Jeruselum because he is not allowed to enter Israeli territory. Like the greeting card embroidered with the cartoon of one of Palestine’s most famous illustrators Handala, who was assassinated for his political art.

The gift card came from Gaza in 2000, and shows the visage of a Palestinian facing his land with the words “We will return. “
